Joseph P. McCarthy
Joseph P. McCarthy was born on January 24, 1923, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, his father, Patrick, was 38 and his mother, Mary, was 36. . In Rye his family lived at 41 Grapal Street. Joseph’s household consisted of his father and mother, his 2 brothers Daniel and John and his sister Grace. Joseph’s father had a high school education, and worked as a carpenter. Joseph’s mother had an 8th grade education, and worked as a dietitian.
Joseph was a very active member of the Rye High School class of 1940. Joseph participated in the boxing club, drivers club, and fingerprinting club. Joseph was also very active in school sports, and played for the varsity football team, varsity baseball team, and basketball team.
In 1942 Joseph’s enlisted into the U. S. Merchant Marines, serving as an Ensign during World War II. In September of 1944 while serving off Corsica and North Africa, Joseph was notified that his brother
Lieut. John G. McCarthy was
killed in action while flying in a mission over Romania.
Right after the war, in October 1945, Joseph would marry Miss Carolyn A. Feeley. Eventually they would have three sons and the family would move to Florida in the 1960's. There, Joseph was a highly respected boat surveyor for over 35 years.
Joseph P. McCarthy, 81 died on April 13, 2004 in Ft. Lauderdale, at the time of his death he left behind sons, John of Vermont and Richard and Robert of Illinois, and 10 grandchildren.
''Himself'' was a true Irishman. Memorial Services were held Friday April 30,2004, 8:00PM at "The Pub".
